Can Stairlifts Be Installed on Open-Riser Stairs?
Open-riser staircases, sometimes described as slatted stairs, are stairs where there isn’t a solid vertical panel between each step.
Because the underside of each tread is visible, homeowners sometimes assume a stairlift can’t be fitted safely.
In most cases, it can.
The track still fixes to the steps
A stairlift does not require a closed riser.
The support legs for the track attach to the horizontal stair treads, so the absence of a vertical section between the steps doesn’t normally cause an issue.
Screw length becomes more important
On a conventional staircase, there is often more material hidden underneath the tread.
With an open-riser staircase, the underside is exposed.
For this reason, the installer needs to ensure the fixing screws aren’t long enough to protrude through the bottom of the step.
Shorter suitable screws may be used where necessary.
Does it remain secure?
Yes.
Using a shorter fixing doesn’t automatically mean the stairlift is less secure. The correct screw and fixing method are chosen based on the construction and thickness of the tread.
The track is also supported at multiple points along the staircase.
What about the appearance underneath?
Because open-riser stairs are visible from below, neat installation is particularly important.
Correctly sized fixings prevent screw ends being visible underneath the steps and help maintain the appearance of the staircase.
Straight and curved open-riser stairs
Both straight and curved systems can potentially be fitted depending on the staircase layout.
As always, the construction and available width need to be assessed properly before choosing a lift.
Final thoughts
Open-riser stairs do not normally prevent stairlift installation.
The main difference is simply taking extra care with the fixings so screws don’t protrude through the exposed underside of the treads.
