Can a Stairlift Be Installed on Stairs with Doors at the Top or Bottom?

If you have a doorway close to your stairs, it’s completely normal to wonder whether a stairlift will get in the way.

In most cases, a stairlift can still be installed, but the position of the door — especially at the bottom — makes a big difference.

Doors at the top of the stairs

At the top of the stairs, it’s rarely an issue.

Stairlift tracks usually only extend a small amount onto the landing, so even if a door is close to the top step, it can normally still open and close without any problems.

Doors at the bottom of the stairs

The bottom of the stairs is where things need a bit more planning.

A stairlift needs space to park, and the track often extends out onto the floor. If there’s a doorway right there, it can become a trip hazard or block access.

Solutions like hinge tracks

In these situations, a hinged or folding track can be used.

These can be manual or automatic and allow the bottom section of the track to fold up out of the way when not in use.

This means the stairlift can still be installed without blocking the doorway.
