Can Stairlifts Be Installed on Either Side of the Stairs?

One question people often ask before arranging a stairlift survey is whether the lift can be installed on either side of the staircase.

In many homes the answer is yes, but the exact position usually depends on the layout of the stairs and what obstacles might be present.

Where stairlifts are normally installed

On most straight staircases the stairlift is installed on the wall side of the stairs.

This is typically the most practical position because it keeps the lift closer to the wall and leaves more walking space on the staircase.

In many homes the stairs run along the gable wall or side of the house, which makes the wall side the natural place for the stairlift rail, it’s not in the way of anyone and therefore cannot a trip hazard.

Curved staircases can be different

Curved staircases are a little more flexible.

Because the rail is designed specifically for the staircase, the stairlift can sometimes be installed on either side depending on the layout and the turns involved.

For example:

  • Some curved staircases work best on the wall side
  • Others may work better on the banister side
  • The final position usually depends on the complexity of the staircase

This is something that is normally confirmed during a survey.

Stairlifts don’t attach to the wall

A common misconception is that stairlifts need to be fixed to the wall.

In reality, stairlift rails are mounted directly to the staircase steps. The rail sits on small legs which are secured using wood screws that go straight into the stair treads.

Because of this design, a stairlift doesn’t actually require a wall to support it.

What if the stairs are in the middle of the house?

In some homes the staircase is positioned in the middle of the house rather than against an outside wall.

In these situations the stairlift can often be installed on either side of the stairs, as long as there are no obstructions.

If there is a banister on one side and a clear wall on the other, the lift will normally be installed on the wall side. If both sides are clear, the installer can usually advise to you whichever side might work best for the layout.

Why a survey is important

Although many staircases allow flexibility, the exact position of the stairlift is normally confirmed during a home survey.

The engineer will check things such as:

  • Doors or obstacles near the stairs
  • The position of handrails or banisters
  • Landing space at the top and bottom
  • The safest and most practical side for the rail

If you’re unsure which side your stairlift would be installed on, you can always request a quote or survey and we’ll be happy to advise.

Stairlift positioning – FAQs

Can a stairlift be fitted on either side of the stairs?

In many cases yes. The final position depends on the layout of the staircase and any obstacles nearby.

Are stairlifts normally installed on the wall side?

Yes, most straight stairlifts are installed on the wall side of the staircase.

Can curved stairlifts go on the banister side?

Yes. Curved stairlifts can sometimes be installed on either side depending on the design of the staircase.

Do stairlifts attach to the wall?

No. Stairlift rails are normally fixed directly to the staircase steps using small mounting legs and wood screws.

Will a survey confirm the correct side?

Yes. A stairlift survey will determine the safest and most practical side for installation.
